Lawrence Street Gallery: Artist-Owned, Community-Centered, and Always Changing

Lawrence Street Gallery is a fine arts gallery in downtown Ferndale, Michigan, built and sustained by artists who believe in showing work, building community, and keeping art accessible. Established in 1987, the gallery has grown into a long-standing creative presence in the region, with exhibitions that change monthly and a deep commitment to supporting Michigan artists.

Each month, the gallery presents a new show, featuring a rotating spotlight exhibition at the front of the space and a larger member exhibition throughout the rest of the gallery. This structure allows visitors to experience both focused, curated shows and a broad view of the work created by the gallery’s member artists. All exhibitions are free and open to the public, and the space is intentionally welcoming to both first-time visitors and long-time collectors.

An Artist-Owned, Artist-Run Gallery

Lawrence Street Gallery operates as an artist-owned S-Corporation. Each member artist is not only an exhibitor, but also a part owner of the gallery during their time as a member. While membership changes over time, the model ensures that the gallery is collectively owned, managed, and sustained by working artists who are invested in its long-term success.

Because of this structure, the gallery is truly artist-run in both philosophy and practice. Member artists volunteer their time and professional skills to manage daily operations, curate exhibitions, staff the gallery, and engage directly with visitors. On any given day, guests are likely to be welcomed by an exhibiting artist who can speak knowledgeably about the work on the walls, the current exhibition, or the gallery itself.

Learning the Business of Art

In addition to exhibition opportunities, membership at Lawrence Street Gallery offers artists hands-on experience in the practical side of running a gallery. Depending on their interests and involvement, members may participate in curatorial planning, exhibition scheduling, event coordination, retail operations, and e-commerce management. Artists gain experience with inventory systems, pricing, sales, marketing, and customer engagement, along with the collaborative decision-making required to operate a shared creative business.

This structure allows artists to build skills that extend beyond the studio. Many members treat their time at the gallery as both a creative and professional chapter, learning how galleries function from the inside while contributing their own expertise to the collective.

Exhibitions, Receptions, and Community Events

Exhibitions change monthly, and the gallery hosts two public receptions most months, typically on the first and third Sundays from 2:00 to 4:30 pm. These receptions are free to attend and include light refreshments. Sunday receptions also make visiting easy, with free street parking in Ferndale and convenient public parking lots behind the gallery on Troy Street. A rear entrance is available for easy access.

Beyond monthly exhibitions, Lawrence Street Gallery has a long history of hosting juried competitions, invitational shows, and special exhibitions across a wide range of media. Past programming has included photography, printmaking, ceramics, drawing and figure exhibitions, as well as themed and experimental shows shaped by the interests of the artists and the community. Over the years, the gallery has also hosted events such as art jewelry shows, creativity classes, poetry readings, artist talks, and book signings.

A Wide Range of Media and Voices

The work on display at Lawrence Street Gallery reflects the diversity of its artists and exhibitions. Visitors will find original pieces in many media, including acrylic, oil, and watercolor painting; drawing and printmaking; fiber art; ceramics; photography; sculpture in metal, clay, bronze, and wood; jewelry; and functional and decorative objects. The emphasis is always on original, one-of-a-kind work offered at approachable price points, making collecting art feel inviting rather than intimidating.

The gallery maintains an optimal membership of approximately 28 artists, allowing for a balance between variety and cohesion. Member artists are encouraged to pursue solo exhibitions while also participating in group shows that highlight the strength of the collective.

A Gallery with a History of Place

Lawrence Street Gallery takes its name from its original home at 29 West Lawrence Street in Pontiac, Michigan, where it was first established in an old Salvation Army building filled with natural light, tall ceilings, and wood floors. As the membership and vision expanded, the gallery moved to a second Pontiac location at 6 North Saginaw Street. In December 2003, the gallery relocated to its current home at 22620 Woodward Avenue in Ferndale, a space designed specifically to support exhibitions by member artists and invited guests.

While the location has changed over the years, the mission has remained consistent: to showcase the depth of artistic talent in the region and to offer visitors fresh, thoughtfully presented work in a welcoming setting.

A Living, Working Gallery

At its core, Lawrence Street Gallery is a living gallery and a working cooperative, shaped by the artists who own it and the community that supports it. Exhibitions evolve, programming shifts, and new voices are regularly introduced, but the focus remains on meaningful creative exchange. Whether visiting for a reception, exploring a new exhibition, or speaking directly with an artist, the gallery offers a space where art is not only displayed but actively shared.
